UX Prototype & Tutorial Solves IoT Client's Onboarding Challenge
This worldwide tech giant had a unique solution for onboarding Internet of Things (IoT) devices, but the developer onboarding process had a steep learning curve and required use of a complex tool. This nine-month engagement allowed me to lead the team into new territory, to understand the client's proprietary process and translating that process into a digestible format that sets IoT developers up for success.

-
We need a way for IoT developers to understand our IoT ownership tool
-
We need a solid flow that guides IoT developers step-by-step
-
We need insightful examples to share with IoT developers for easier comprehension

PROCESS
There was a steep learning curve for the team, which was flattened through multiple whiteboarding and discuss sessions. On top of the learning curve, the client was still figuring out how everything should fit together, so we were learning in parallel. Through extensive note taking and regrouping to discuss and digest information, the project team was up-and-running in no time. Week after week the team took a segment of the process and fleshed it out, keeping in mind the target audience is a developer with little-to-no IoT experience. This particular client had ghosting tendencies and had to be sure consistent reminders were always given, as a way of keeping this project on the radar.

SOLUTION
In order to resolve the issue of a steep learning curve, we delivered a UX-centered, clickable prototype and an HTML tutorial. The high-fidelity UX prototype, created for the internal client team, supplied the team with a comprehensive understanding of each step in the process and identified where friction still remains for new IoT developers. To assist the client team in the creation of a web tutorial, we delivered a 50+ screen, responsive walkthrough that begins with an explanation of what IoT is, gives examples and insight into each phase of onboarding IoT devices, and includes mockups of the different entities that pass off "ownership" of credentials. These tools helped to paint a picture for IoT developers, but also illustrated gaps and issues for the client to solve. The client was thrilled by the level of complexity delivered, which lead to two additional scopes of work.

WHAT CONTRIBUTED TO SUCCESS?
-
Investigative questions to ensure the correct context has been received
-
Drawing the client back in when the time is right
-
Facilitated collaboration to prevent silos
-
Thoughtfully re-engaging an absent client
